OUR FAVOURITE TAVERNAS ON CORFU

Eating out on the Greek island of Corfu is a truly delightful experience.  Delicious Corfiot dishes are freshly prepared and cooked in traditional family run tavernas where you will find the Greek hospitality and warmth a memorable experience.  Here are some of our favourite Tavernas where the food is consistently good and the welcome you receive will make you feel very special.

The Rocks Taverna - Kaminaki

Kaminaki lies to the North-East of Corfu in an area which has become known as "Durrell Country" where the famous writer Lawrence Durrell lived with his family from 1935-39.  It is an old fishing village which nestles at the bottom of a steep hill.  This village still retains a true Corfiot atmosphere.  At the bottom of the hill is a beautiful gently sloping beach which provides excellent swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear water.  To the right of the bay, in an elevated position, you will find " The Rocks Taverna". From the terrace there are magnificent views across to Albania and the Greek Mainland whilst to the right you can see Corfu town.

Access to the taverna is either along the beach to the right, where a few steps leads you along a pathway cut into the rocks, or alternatively there is an alleyway on the right,  just before reaching the beach,  which takes you through the main kitchen where you are greeted by the family, Georgos the family head and chef, his wife and son Nick who serves at the tables.

Stroll along the side alley and enter into the kitchen of The Rocks Taverna where you will receive a warm, Corfiot welcome.             From the terrace of The Rocks Taverna you will find the most amazing views whilst enjoying traditionally cooked Cypriot cuisine.

This delightful family taverna is a true gem.  The chef, Georgos, spent many years in France and Italy where he was taught much about Mediterranean cuisine.  This expertise is reflected in his marvellously varied menu which features all the usual favourite dishes alongside many Corfiot specialities with a unique blend of Italian and French flavours.

The family takes great pride in ensuring that all the ingredients are freshly prepared and bought daily.  Everything is cooked to order to maintain their high standards and reputation.  If you would like a particular meal which is not listed in the menu Georgos will be delighted to prepare it for you provided that you make your order a day in advance.

Meet the family. They will always give you a warm Corfiot welcome!                    The chef's son, Nick, serves in the taverna whilst his father cooks the meals and his mother assists in the kitchen.

Why not visit this taverna next time you are in Corfu.  Maybe we will see you there!

Panorama Restaurant - Porta

Panorama, as the name suggests, is situated in the elevated village of Porta with breath-taking views across to Albania, which appears so close you could almost swim across, and Corfu Town to the right.  It is within the area aptly named by the press as 'Kensington-on-sea'.  This is a truly tranquil spot for a romantic meal.

Access to Panorama is via the crossroads at Sinies/San Stefanos which is on the road to Kassiopi from Corfu Town.  The road is a well maintained tarmac road which slowly climbs for 3 kms after which you are well rewarded for your efforts!

Panorama is under new management this year.  It has now become a family enterprise being run by two brothers, Yiannis and Georgos, and ably assisted by Yianni's wife, Manon.  Yiannis and Manon look after the front of house and give a very warm welcome in fluent English, French and of course Greek!  Georgos is the master chef preparing traditional Greek cuisine.

Whilst the extensive terrace with its awesome views is very enticing we would also recommend drawing yourself away from the views to look inside the restaurant.  It has been beautifully restored in very traditional Corfiot style and is adorned with magnificent oil paintings depicting various aspects of Greek life, painted by Yiannis himself, who attended the Montreal School of Art in Canada.  Maybe you will be tempted to make Yiannis an offer, since he has been known to reluctantly sell the occasional painting!

Panorama offers a selection of fine Greek dishes all prepared from fresh, local ingredients.  The family takes great pride in serving only the best produce cooked and served with great attention to detail.  Here you will probably find the best warm baked bread and herb dipping oils on the island!  We cannot recommend any particular dish as everything we have sampled has been a delight to the taste buds as well as the eyes!  However, if you have difficulty with your selection, Yiannis or Manon will explain each dish and happily help you make the best choice.

Most Saturday evenings Georgos cooks whole lambs on the spit.  This has been very popular among tourists and locals alike.  Therefore, it is essential that you reserve a table and request the lamb in advance to avoid disappointment.

Panorama is open every day for morning coffee, drinks, lunches and evening meals during the summer and at weekends during the winter.

The views from Panorama Restaurant are spectacular.            The interior of the restaurant is traditional Corfiot style adorned with Yiannis paintings depicting Greek life.

Whole lambs roasting on the spit by Georgos whilst Yianni is waiting to welcome you.

Whilst on Corfu it would be a mistake not to visit Yiannis, Georgos and Manon at least once, you will not forget the experience.  We will no doubt see you there!
